How to Inspect Head Protection

Spread the love

Head protection is a must for those who work in areas where the potential for head protection  exists due to falling or flying objects or bumping the head against fixed hazards. It is also required when working with electrical hazards. This type of PPE helps to prevent head injuries that can result in permanent impairment or even death.

To make sure that your head protection is in good condition for its intended use, inspect it regularly for any visible signs of damage. This includes checking the shell for cracks or dents, and examining the suspension system (headband and chin strap) for any signs of wear. In addition, examine any attached accessories or attachments for damage or wear, and ensure that they are securely fastened to the head protection.

Inspect Interior Cushioning

Some types of head protection feature additional cushioning inside that provides extra comfort and impact absorption. If yours has this, check that it is in good condition and not compressed or worn down. Also, if your helmet has been subject to a significant impact, it is recommended that you replace it, even if no visible signs of damage are evident.

The CSA standard Z94.1-15 (R2020), Industrial protective headwear – performance, selection, care and use does not specify colours for different jobs; however, workplaces may establish their own colour coding guidelines. This can be useful to help identify employees in a crowd and ensure that all workers on site are wearing the correct head protection for their work activity.
